| Essex Newspapers
in 2003 This video was filmed and produced by staff and students of the Davenant Foundation School, Loughton. Led by their teacher, Mr. Eastwick, a group of Davenant students visited the offices of the Guardian Newspaper in Walthamstow to witness the production of an issue of this weekly Essex paper. The group then travelled to Colchester to see the paper printed at the Newsquest Printing Company. The students had previously studied the 1952 archive film about the West Essex Gazette and were able to compare the methods and technologies used in 1952 and 2003. Their film was edited using Moviemaker software and the students also added a commentary, transition effects, titles and credits. News gathering and printing in 2003 is an efficient and rapid process, utilising computer technology and electronic communications to the full. The Davenant students saw photographs edited digitally, journalists meeting deadlines aided by the latest technology, desk top publishing techniques used to compose news pages – all leading to the final edited copy of the Guardian newspaper. At Colchester they were impressed by the cleanliness, speed and organisation of Newsquest. A tour of the warehouse was followed by a demonstration of the printing process, carried out in 2003 by computer-controlled machinery in clean and bright conditions! Finally, they were able to visit the Distribution Centre and see the completed newspapers loaded on to lorries ready for delivery to newsagents in Essex.
