3D Level 1

Characteristics

Young children will explore materials in a playful way. Results will not always be permanent.

They will be able to make structures by joining simple objects together.

They will use a range of modelling materials squeezing, pinching and rolling them to make simple familiar or fantasy objects.

They will add colour, pattern and texture to their objects.

3D Projects

These children looked at a poster by an artist who made humorous pictures of buildings with human faces. They used cardboard boxes and other found materials to make a 3D version. The end result shows the children thought about the overall shape of their composition and made simple joins using tape. They were so pleased with the result they talked to the whole school about it in an assembly.

While exploring geometric shapes in mathematics the children used found cardboard objects to make animals. This child has made a strong structure with good proportions which is very effective. They have used colour well to describe the form and enhance the overall effect.

The children glued a cardboard box onto a background. They then had to decide how they would develop this to represent something. The project combined learning about the relief process with the children’s natural tendency to work in a stylised way.

This child has understood the potential of what they have been asked to do.
The final relief structure shows good understanding of scale and proportion. The materials have been controlled to produce an expressive, dynamic piece.
The children made masks using card and found materials. The final results were decorated with tissue paper, metallic papers and found objects, including sequins. This child shows a good understanding of proportion. The image is clear, well balanced and very effective. Colour and decoration have been applied without covering up the underlying form of the face
