Printing Level 3

Characteristics

Pupils return to their work at different stages and use simple processes to make more complex designs.
They develop their work from preliminary studies and investigations.
They understand how printing differs from other art processes and how it is used in different cultures.

Print Projects

The pupils looked at how artists from a range of cultures represented mythological beasts. They used polystyrene sheets and soft pencils to produce their own versions. They built the print up in layers, cutting and printing the background first. They cut the final figure from the base block and printed it with the darkest colour. This pupil showed good understanding of the materials. The design is strong, making good use of  line and pattern.

The pupils made screen prints. They cut stencils from newsprint placed under their screens to form an image. They used water based paint mixed with wallpaper paste as the ink. This pupil has created an underwater design. The skill of the cutting adds to the strength of the design. They have recognised the visual possibility of printing on unusual surfaces. The newspaper adds interest and texture to the print.

The pupils made studies in pencil of barns and outbuildings during a visit to a farm. They used cut pieces of card glued to a base board to make prints from their sketches. This pupil has used the visual quality of cut card very effectively to represent the decaying wood panels of the old barn. The print has an abstract quality that works well as an element in a repeat pattern.
