Catch the numbers: teaching suggestions

Background:
This activity is a fun fast-paced activity for practising times tables and completing number lines. This version of the activity has been designed to practise any of the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.

Activity description:
This version of the activity practises the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables. Each game that you play focuses on one of these tables, called at random from the pool. The object of the game is to complete a number line with all ten numbers from the given times table. Both correct and incorrect numbers for that times table fall from the top of the screen and the player must move Piska and Pod from left to right across the screen, using the arrow keys on the keyboard, so that they catch the correct numbers in their net. Once they have caught a correct number it is transferred to the number line at the bottom of the screen, so the player can see how many numbers are still left to find to complete the number line. The activity gets steadily faster if the player chooses to play multiple times.

Teaching suggestions:
This activity works very well as both a class activity on an interactive whiteboard and an individual activity for mental maths practice. Children will love the excitement of trying to catch the correct numbers or avoiding the wrong numbers and will be motivated by the way the activity gradually speeds up. Use this activity in conjunction with times table practise and work on number lines.
