Cave Escape

Background:
Your pupils will love this fast-paced underwater game and it is best used as additional practice to spelling work. It is advisable that you work through the game instructions at the beginning of the game, so that everyone knows how to play it. The aim of the game is to steer your submarine up through an underwater tunnel using the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard. There are five levels, each with a word to spell and your aim is to steer over the correctly spelled word, and get out of the tunnel without losing your three lives. You lose lives by crashing into the walls of the tunnel. Note: this game takes a bit of practice!

Teaching suggestions:
Play this as a class with a projector or interactive whiteboard or in teams. The motivation is the excitement of the game and the children will not realise they are practising spelling and word recognition. As the submarine is controlled using the arrow keys on the keyboard, make sure the interactive whiteboard has a keyboard which can be reached by the children.

Further activities using the printable resources:
Provided with this activity are three sheets with words which appear in the game and images which represent them. Copy and cut these out and use them for a number of activities. They can be used for pairs and snap games. They can also be used as flash cards for spelling the different words. Hold up a picture and see who can spell the word.
