Magic Maths

Background
In Year 1, children begin to use their counting skills to add sets of objects. For example, children need to know that '8 and 1' is equivalent to having a group of 8 objects then counting one more into the group to make 9. Children need to become familiar with the addition symbol and to know that addition is equivalent to counting on. Through regular experience and consolidation, children start to remember some of the key facts for bonds to 10. 'Magic Maths' practises addition of two numbers up to a total of 9, and also features shape symbols (circles, triangles and squares) to replace one of the numbers in each sum.

Teaching suggestions
Children use their keyboard to input the missing number into the sums shown. There are ten sums to answer and children can have as many attempts as they need to get the answer right. At the end of ten sums the magic maths machine produces a prize! Introduce your pupils to the concept of using symbols to replace numbers in sums. They will need extra practice in sums where one of the numbers in the calculation is missing. (e.g 4+__ = 6). They need to count back from the total to reach the missing figure in the calculation.

Children can be encouraged to use a number track to check their answer is correct before choosing a number to type in.

Follow-up activities using printable resources
On the printable resources provided, there are numbers, addition signs and symbols that can be cut out. The cards could be handed out at random to pupils; the teacher could then choose two pupils and stand them together, look at their numbers, make a sum and ask the others to find out and discuss which pupil now holds the missing card. Alternatively, the teacher could give an answer for which pupils create the sum.
