Down on the Farm
Background
This activity is the first of four related activities, which practise simple counting and sorting objects. This activity deals with counting objects up to a total of 5. Children look at the screen, count how many of a specified object they can see and then click on the right number. This activity follows curriculum guidelines for simple counting and number recognition.
Teaching suggestions
As an introduction to the online activity, gather some classroom objects or pictures and get your pupils to practise counting how many they can see. You could also give each child five cards with numbers 1-5 on. When you ask how many pencils there are, for example, your pupils could hold up the correct number. The online activity itself could be carried out as whole class work and also by individual pupils. Draw your pupils' attention to the hamburger that is built up as the activity progresses and encourage them to describe what they see. Look out for the spider and the fly!
Further activities using the printable resources
Use the printable graphics as further reinforcement of the activity. They can be printed out and cut up so that your pupils can practise counting in small groups. The graphics can also be used to play pelmanism or other pair matching games.
