This activity highlights the way words are made using roots and suffixes. Children can explore how words are made of different elements combining in different ways and can experiment with inventing new words. .

Teaching suggestions
This can be played as a whole class activity with everyone involved in the process of making a word. Playing this as a whole class will provide plenty of opportunity for feedback and open questions. Doing the activity in small groups or individually adds further reinforcement to the skill. .

Follow up activities using the printable resources
Children can cut up the words and suffixes from the printout and use them to experiment with making new words. These words could also be used to play a variety of games, including snap or pelmanism, where the suffix has to correspond with the word. Children could also draw up their own list of words that are made of roots and suffixes and make their own spinners.
